Nobbys Surf Club gets some CityServe love

Is there a better place in Newcastle than overlooking Nobbys beach towards the iconic Nobbys headland? probably not! Nobbys SLSC was the destination over the weekend for a convergence of a mass of volunteers from churches, SLSC and community for a CityServe project!

Clockwise from top – Jason Cleare (NCC), a Nobbys member, Rhonda Scrutton (Hunter SLSC CEO), Tash (Nobby’s SLSC), Ps Matt Jones & Darren Matheson (both Adamstown Community Church)

The site had been set with a large amount of preparatory works done by Newcastle City Council including the installing of much needed extra women’s toilets. Thanks to the generosity of Earp Bros providing tiles the two member’s toilet blocks had already been fully retiled! Hard work by club members led by Natasha Ryan, the walls had been cleared and washed with the help of Rhonda Scruton (SLSC CEO) ready for the day.

This CityServe site was owned by Adamstown Community Church with member Darren Matheson steering the troops over the weekend. Volunteers came from everywhere including C3 Victory’s Northwest Campus, Nobbys SLSC and the community, this project was truly a team effort! Thanks to the team at Nobbys SLSC who provided bacon and egg rolls for breakfast and kept the BBQ hot for lunches over the weekend.

NCC’s Jason Cleare live on Rhema FM’s broadcast on the Saturday

The place came alive with Rhema FM doing a live broadcast on site, a visit from Jet’s player ‘Mitch’ and councillor Rufo on the BBQ all added to the feel. But as always it was the contribution of the volunteers that worked tirelessly over the weekend that are the real hero’s! In difficult conditions on the Sunday they kept pressing on to complete the Club, an outstanding effort! Over two day was fully painted internally including, members and public toilet blocks, main function room and gym. On top of this some exterior work including tables, chairs and bins got painted and stainless steel polished.

IMAG1978 (Mobile)Again massive contributions by the business community including: Earps suppling tiles, Scafflink, Water for a Cause, Singo’s Meats, Bakers Delight Market Town and Growers Best Fruit Market. With detailed project management by Jason Cleare and Peter Wilton from NCC in the lead up and coordinating the enormous amount of paint supplies.

All volunteers are to be congratulated on an excellent weekend, thankyou!

This being the third SLSC along with Stockton (the fourth) completed this past weekend our sites look to next weekend and volunteers are welcomed to number five, Newcastle SLSC! It’s not too late to volunteer, head to Signups.

Serving together,

Rick Prosser
